Hi everyone! Welcome to another episode of the Spiritual Alien Podcast.
So, to continue this series to help you Get Your Shit Together, this episode is about brainstorming some eco-friendly ideas of potential gifts for your loved ones for this Holiday season!
As the Holiday season approaches, so does the anxiety of wondering and not knowing what you are going to gift to your parents, siblings, friends and so on. This is especially difficult if you are a vegan who lives a minimalist life and you are just not into this whole cycle of buying, consumption and materialism, or vice-versa, if you are gifting to a vegan family member or friend. Your meat-eating parents probably won’t appreciate you buying them a vegan cookbook as an indirect way to tell them to go vegan, but you can get them a practical gift that they will reuse which connects to some of the points in this episode that I will share next.
So, with that said, tonight I will share with you 5 eco-friendly gift ideas that you can benefit from as well as those you love, so you can help the environment while you get your shit together.
We are being restricted with footwear and we don’t even realize it. Foot health is highly important but it is something that is often neglected. I have noticed recently that all of my shoes — about 4 or 5 pairs — tend to squeeze the shit out of my toes, despite using them for years. Because of this new awareness, I have begun to feel uncomfortable wearing them. Your feet are supposed to expand and your toes are not supposed to be squished together even when you are barefoot. I don’t wear high-heels because they are annoying to me, however, I know a lot of women who wear high-heels for the hell of it and they have destroyed their feet. Earth Runners Sandals from earthrunners.com combine the barefoot benefits of earthing shoes with the functionality of minimalist running sandals to offer the closest thing to truly barefoot running. Meanwhile, Vivobarefoot from vivobarefoot.com offer shoes that are wide, thin and flexible for better stability and freedom of movement, and they are made with sustainable materials. This episode is not sponsored by either company.
- Food and Drinking
I bet you didn’t think of this one! You can gift wooden plates and bowls, and bamboo utensils, to a powerful juicer, mason jars and metal straws, to a hydro flask reusable water bottle and a water filter. Don’t forget the ChicoBag reusable snack bags and shopping bags to carry your food as well. These products are not only reusable but the prices are not that crazy for most of them and they are also very practical, especially if the people you know are not even aware that such a thing such as bamboo utensils exists or if someone needs a boost to drink more water.
- Natural Skin Care and Makeup:
Support a small business this Holiday season and purchase a body care product or vegan makeup from a small shop owner over Etsy.com! There are literally so many people with small businesses over Etsy that I always have a hard time choosing which one to buy from. I use Etsy to find natural and handmade body and facial creams, soaps, makeup and more. I am sensitive to energy, so I love handmade stuff because the energy is focused and high-vibrational. I have never regretted a purchase from a small shop owner and I invite you to give it a try this year! Support a small business and you will support a family that will be very happy to do business with you.
- Crystals, Essential Oils and Incense:
First, please do not gift crystals to anyone. I have seen this as a suggestion but I do not agree and here is why. I have been gifted crystals before only to not resonate with them. I appreciated the gift because it came from a loved one, but I never connected to any of the crystals that were gifted to me. If you want to gift someone crystals, purchase a gift card from your favorite shop so that they can choose one or several by themselves. This way, they will choose what they resonate with and they will have a better connection with their chosen crystals.
Second, you probably know of someone who is into spirituality and wellness, perhaps a yoga teacher or fitness coach, or a friend who recently got into healthy habits. You can gift an oil diffuser with Young Living essential oils or find handmade essential oils from a small shop owner over Etsy.com. Do not bother investing $300 in an oil diffuser, you can find plenty of amazing options over your local metaphysical shop or on Amazon. Diffusing essential oils is healthier than burning incense especially if the incense sticks are mass-produced rather than handmade and soaked in natural essential oils, which will lead me to the third point.
Third, we breathe in the toxic chemicals used to create the incense sticks or cones, so make sure that if you do gift incense, that it has been ethically made with natural fragrances. Some people are allergic to incense smoke, so diffusing oils is a better option. But be careful with certain essential oils as they can be toxic to your pets, even if they are natural and chemical-free. Don’t forget to investigate if some of these oils are causing deforestation or other type of negative impact to the environment.
Fourth, sage smudging to cleanse the person and their environment. Some people are unable to smudge due to the smoke alarms, so you can gift a spray version of sage. I would recommend that you find an alternative to white sage due to it being overharvested for commercial use and exploitation, although some sources claim that this is a lie, I prefer to choose the safe route and tell you to get another alternative such as mugwort, lavender, wormwood, rosemary, lemon balm and others.
- Audiobooks and Phone Cases
Depending on what your loved ones are into, you can gift a book or audiobook on lifestyle and self-development. If you know of someone who wants to get their shit together, two of my favorite books are “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo and “101 Ways to Go Zero Waste” by Kathryn Kellogg. If they don’t like to read or listen to audiobooks but they own a smartphone, you can gift them an eco-friendly phone case from Pela from pelacase.com, their phone cases are plastic-free and they donate 5% of total sales to an environmental charity, so what better way to rock out a new phone case while supporting a good cause!
Let me know if you purchase any of the ideas I gave you by commenting on my Spiritual Alien graphics across social media with the title of this episode, I would love to see your eco-friendly gifts! Better yet, share a picture of your eco-friendly gifts and tag me so I can see it!
